The Braille Rallye

This coming Saturday will be the 59th edition of our Club’s Braille Rallye.  First held in 1963 (we skipped two years during Covid), this event has been a long time favorite of the Club.

This year we have moved the rally to the Manassas Battlefield.  We will start and finish on the grounds of the Winery at Bull Run which is on Route 29 immediately adjacent to the Battlefield.  The course will be shorter (about 9 miles), and the emphasis will be on questions about historical markers at four different sites (rather than scoring based on a timed drive).  Lunch will be served after the driving portion of the event is concluded.  All adult participants will receive a complimentary bottle of wine.  In addition, the wine tasting room will be open, and there are complimentary tours of the grounds conducted by the staff of the winery.  So, there will be plenty of entertainment for those who attend.

I anticipate there will be roughly 8 to 12 visually impaired participants (about half of which will be high school students) on hand.  We need drivers to shepherd the navigators around the course and help them answer the historical questions we have posed in braille.  In addition, we also will need some help getting participants to and from the event (which we typically do by matching up Club members with participants who live nearby)
